So today it was all about the Mexican holiday 'The day of the dead' and sugar skulls. The Mexicans believe that at midnight on Halloween night the spirits of their deceased children come back to earth to be with their families for 24 hours and the deceased adults come back to have dinner with their families. I think this is a really special holiday. As its joyful and celebratory. It reminds me of a similar old Irish tradition. Irish people believed that their deceased relatives would return to earth for one day too. They would light candles and put them in the window so their relatives could find them at night. The Mexicans however, would create alters to honour their relatives. They would fill the the alters with flowers, ornaments, toys and gifts. They would also put sugar skulls on the alters. The sugar skull has become huge for Halloween with so many different interpretations. This is my first interpretation.
I loved creating this skull. I used Illamasqua Base colour to create the pale base. I applied it with a foundation brush and was very generous with the amount I used. I really wanted strong deep colour for the eyes so I new I needed to layer colour. I first used Melt Cosmetics 'Love Sick' eyeshadow stack in the colour 'Love Sick' around the eye creating the round shape. I then put MAC pigment over the top in the colour 'blue brown'. I also used the same melt colour for the contouring and over the lips. I then used Makeup Forever bright palette in white over the lips using the shape of the eyeshadow brush to create the tooth shape. I then used the black colour from this same palette to draw my black line detail. I then completed this look by using the red shade from the same makeup forever palette to create the red flower on the forehead. I did this with an eyeshadow brush. I did struggle with thinking of my idea on the spot. I like at least half an hour to be inspired to create an innovative idea. I also struggled with the black liner detail and keeping a steady hand. I will practise this to master it.
