Timed assessment: In the role of the Designer, Makeup Artist: Erin Stacey

Health and Safety check:

Technique:

1. Erin began by cleansing, toning and moisturising my face. 
2. She then applied the primer with a foundation brush working it into the skin.
3. She then applied the kryolan white base, working it into the skin with the kabuki brush. 
4. Erin then applied a light layer of translucent powder with a big brush to the skin. 
5. Erin then applied the red colour from the lovesick stack to both the inner and outer corners of my eye. Blending it out to create an explosion of colour fading out when it got to the centre of the eye.
6. She then went over this with the purple colour doing the same thing.
7. She then went in with the orange colour but applied this to the centre of the eye on the top and bottom lid.
8. She then blended all of these colours. 
9. Once it was all blended nicely Erin applied the liquid liner staying close to the lash line to give the eye definition. 
10. Erin then began shaping and filling the eyebrow with the red from the same eyeshadow palette. 
11. Once this was all done I applied mascara to my lashes.
12. Erin then applied the already sized lashes to my lash line. 
13. Erin then began drawing the heart shape onto my lips using the beet pencil. 
14. She then filled this in using the mac red lipstick.
15. She then applied the rust mac pigment to the heart shape, holding a tissue underneath to catch the fall out. 
16. Erin then went back using the red eyeshadow to strongly contour under my cheek bones to create definition. 

Final evaluation:From the designer to the Makeup Artist.

I am really impressed with Erin's execution of my design. She was really well practised and I really felt that She understood my design and what I wanted from her as an artist.  She seemed excited about completing my design which was a really nice feeling as It meant I could trust that she would put her all into it.
Erin was on time to the assessment and had her brushes marked, her station set up ready for assessment. She was calm and prepared for the assessment. She was wearing all black with her hair tied back and had washed her hands before she began . She then caped me in preparation of the application. She cleansed, toned and moisturised my face and began the application.
I was very happy with Erin's application on the day of the timed assessment. She managed to complete a symmetrical application. Erin had struggled with the placement of the eyeshadow in previous practise's and how far to blend it out but I feel that she aced this in the timed assessment.  This was important as the blending was the most important aspect of my design. I really feel that Erin understood the depth of colour I was after with my design and that she had a good understanding of the techniques needed to complete my design to my satisfaction. Erin did struggle with the symmetry of the lip application also in previous practise sessions but I feel that she again overcame this in the timed assessment. The eyebrows were shaped and filled in symmetrically and the liner on the eyes and false lashes were applied correctly. The only critique I would give Erin would be that I think she could have put a bit more Translucent powder over the base to set it to stop the shine in the images and the movement of the white base but all in all Im really happy with the outcome and how everything came together and I feel that this is a great showcase of Erin's makeup artistry skills.

I'm very pleased with the application so I have decided to grade Erin an A4. I feel that she displayed professionalism and she managed to complete the timed assessment within the set parameters with time to spare for touch ups.

Technique and routine:

1. First I cleansed, toned and moisturised Erin's face ready for makeup application.
2. I then applied the satin primer
3. I then applied the white base with my foundation brush and buffed it in with my kabuki brush.
4. I then applied a thin layer of translucent powder all over the face to set the base. 
5. I then marked out the shape around the eye that I was filling with eyeshadow with my precision brush(at the top as the bottom was to be blended out).
6. I then used my large shadow brush to fill this space with the bronze shadow.
7. I then used my blending brush to blend out the bottom
8. I checked the symmetry of each side and corrected any mistakes.
9. I then went over the lid of each eye with the rust coloured shadow blending as I went
10. Using the black I filled in the crease to create some dimension to the eye. I also went under the lash line.
11. Erin then applied her own mascara to get right down to the root of her lashes.
12. I then began brushing the eyebrow hair (creating symmetry with each brow) upward. This was to make the eyebrow hair white and to make them look longer.
13. I then applied the white supra colour to the lashes.
14. I then filled in Erin's lips with the gold eye cream and went over it with the lipgloss.

Outcome and Final Personal Evaluation:

This has been a really interesting experience for me. When we first exchanged designs I found it quite hard to interpret Erin's face chart. I struggled with where she wanted the colour to go around the eye and how deep she wanted the colour to go etc. After completing Erin's design I felt that the first practise went ok and that I could manage the design once I had had a few practise sessions. Erin did however feel that her design didn't have to wow factor so she altered it slightly which I absolutely loved. I feel that its a much stronger final design and is a great opportunity to showcase my makeup artist skills. I struggled again with the timing of the first practise but my technique was much better with this design. I really understood Erin's face chart and I felt that our communication was much improved.
We both made ourselves available for practise times out of session times and I felt that Erin was really great at giving constructive criticism and direction for the look. We were very honest with each other through the whole process which we both valued as this helped achieve the best final result. I feel that we worked together very well and were a great creative team. I think we connected through the creative process and built a good trust between us which was invaluable in this project as we are working so closely with eachother's creation that we are both so passionate about.  

Im really pleased with the final result. It took me an hour to complete so I used the rest of the time to perfect everything before taking the photos and showing Sue. I feel that I demonstrated a really good application and performed well under pressure to the desired time limit. I was mostly impressed with the symmetry I managed to achieve with the makeup and the blending underneath the eyes. I felt really calm once I got started and was really eager to get started. I had really prepared for this assessment and practised precision and lines at home and practised a few times on Erin to get the look perfect. I struggled with timing when me and erin first swapped designs and with the precision of the lines Erin wanted for her design but through practise I over came these difficulties. I absolutely love this design and think it goes beautifully with Erin's skin tone and hair colour. I wanted to connect with the design so I could create it with the same passion as I would with my own design. I feel I have managed to do this with the final application.

From the makeup artist to the designer.

I felt that Erin prepared her final design really well. She supplied me with clear face charts, photo's from our practise shoots and detailed explanations for what she wanted the final outcome to look like. She talked me through the products she wanted me to use and how she wanted me to use them and she gave great constructive criticism. This all really helped me perfect the application for the timed assessment. The only criticism I would give to Erin would be next time to do a run through on herself of how she wants the end product to look so that I have a better understanding of the desired outcome. I think seeing the images in photographic form before any practises start is really beneficial when interpreting someone else's design. Erin and I had many practises before the assessment which I really appreciated as this gave me the time to perfect my application and build my confidence with her design. 

Final project evaluation: New Elizabethans.

I have really enjoyed this unit and project as a whole. I have really enjoyed learning more about Queen Elizabeth and I'm inspired by the influence she and the Elizabethan times had on future generations. This research has been critical and really inspirational when thinking about my design for my final piece. I have loved working through the design process and I have learned how to correlate information and my ideas to create a final design that I’m proud of.

 I have learned how to work in a team and learned invaluable communication skills whilst working with my Partner for the final assessment.  I have learned a lot in working with my Partners design and talking through my design with my partner. I feel my makeup application skills have improved substantially, and I have learned new technical skills through this assessment process. I did struggle with Organisation and prioritizing work but feel that I have learned from this and will approach the next semester with this in mind. I am more confident with computers and feel that I have gained an enormous amount of knowledge within this area in a short amount of time. I also feel that I have overcome a lot in this semester. I feel a lot more determined and aware that I can succeed at anything with patience, Practise and confidence in my own abilities. With all of this newfound knowledge I know that I’m only going to become a better artist and student with future projects to come.

Outcome and thoughts:

This was our second practise and I felt it went really well. I feel that the first time I took a long time to get the right coverage and to get the right technique but this time I felt like I made much better time. I feel that once I understood the technique needed I could then manage my time better. I feel confident that I with another practise I can make good time whilst keeping my technique good quality for the assessment.

Outcome and Thoughts:

After trying my final design in mine and Erin's practise session, I decided that My final design was too time consuming to manage in time for Erin to complete it successfully in the timed assessment. I also didn't like how the original design looked when translated onto my face. I felt it looked like I had bruises around my eyes because of the placement. Erin also found the dots difficult to do and time consuming and I wasn't happy with it, so I looked closer at what inspired me in the first place and re thought my design. We still had enough time for me to re-think it in time to give Erin enough practise sessions. 

My Design For me was about placement of the makeup around the eye. Creating moods in areas on the face using depth of colour. My look was about highlighting the love that Kat ashley had for Elizabeth. I wanted to do that by channeling a feeling through the use of colour. There is a special connection to my chosen colours. I feel like the pigment can create that depth I wanted for my final look. I had a look for the images that inspired me in the first place and that ignited an emotional reaction from me. I then moved the colours around my face to see what felt right. I Then settled the colours in both inner and outer corners of my eyes and started to deepen the colour and It just worked. I'm really happy with my final Design and I feel that I have really translated the emotion through the make up. I also feel that this is something Erin can complete successfully in the timed assessment.

Instructions for the technique.

Outcome:

I was really happy with the outcome of this practise. I had sent Erin my practise notes, my face chart and photographs of my practise the night before so that she had a good idea of what to do and she could prepare for the day. I  felt that she had really nailed my design in todays session. The blending was the hardest part for her to do so she really had to practise which she did. We had also decided to use the Kryolan base as For me, it seems to blend into the skin a lot better. We also decided to change the lips to the heart shape. i felt that the regular lip shape design seemed boring so we tested it and it worked! I love my final design I think its going to look great and I feel that erin can really pull this off.

Technique:

To start apply a base colour all over the eye. Then I checked over the shape of my models eye to see how to apply the eyeshadow to create the best shape and look. I chose neutral browns as I felt it suited Annie's natural colouring. I then applied Dark brown to Annie's outer corners, under her bottom lash line, and worked it into the crease blending it out as I went. I then applied mascara to the top and bottom lashes. When this was done I sharpened my black eyeliner pencil and applied a thin line to the top lash line to create some definition. I sharpened my white eye pencil and then asked Annie if she was ok with me applying it to her lower water line. She said yes so I applied it gently, breaking when I could see she needed to blink.

I then began shaping and filling Annie's eyebrows using a eyebrow shaping brush and the same dark brown eyeshadow from the Mac palette. Once this was complete the eyeshadow application was complete. 

Outcome:

I'm really pleased with the outcome of this application. I love how it has shaped Annie's eyes. I did struggle with the fall out of the eyeshadow so I think in order to avoid this next time I will use the tissue to hold underneath to catch the the fall out but I was really happy with this result. 

The perfect lip application lesson with Sue Mainstone.

In todays class we were taught how to make up the eyes and lips. Sue gave us a demo and then it was up to us to repeat this on our model. After setting up my station covering my model so not to cover her with makeup and then washing my hands, I then did a consultation with my model Annie. When this was complete I then proceeded with cleansing, toning and moisturizing. Then I applied a matte primer to Annie (my model) and after this I began with the application of the base. I then continued with contouring and when this was complete I began to apply makeup to the eyes and lips.

Lips.

Technique.

•  First of all I sharpened my lip pencil. This is good way to avoid cross contamination. I began lining Annie's lips with mac lip liner. Being careful not to go over her lip line. This did happen once or twice but I just carefully removed it with a cotton bud and re-applied.
• Once the lips are lined I began to fill them in with my lipstick. Decanting the colour on to my hand first to avoid cross contamination. 
• Once the colour has been filled in I then asked Annie to blot her lips with a tissue twice and then lightly dusted the lips with translucent powder. This will help the colour last longer. 

Outcome:

I really love this look on Annie. She had said that she doesn't wear a lot of pink as she thought it didn't suit her but how she was impressed with the lip colour. this was nice to hear as I thought the colour really suited her. Its definitely a 'practise makes perfect' technique as I find this very presise so a steady hand is a need. 

 

Historical Elizabethan lesson with Sue Mainstone

 Today in Sue Mainstone's class we were taught how to apply the perfect Elizabethan makeup. In Elizabethan times however they would use more dangerous products. In todays age there are many tests that have to be carried out on products to deem them safe to use on the public. My favourite white base to use is the Kryolan white from the Supra color palette. However I couldn't find this at the time so I used my grease based makeup forever palette (white). I wasn't particularly pleased with the outcome but I preferred it to the Illamasqua white base.

Technique:

1. I began by Cleansing Tara's face following with toner and moisturiser.
2. I Applied the white base using the foundation brush starting with the centre of the face and working my way out. 
3. I then buffed the white base in using the Kabuki brush. 
4. I then applied a tiny amount of Illamasqua translucent powder over the base to set. 
5. I then applied the red eyeshadow as blusher to the cheeks, applying it gradually to build up an even colour. 
6. I then applied Red from the makeup forever palette to the lips with a slanted brush. 
7. I then applied white base to the eyebrows. I applied white base to the mascara wand and ran it through Tara's eyebrows. I then used the same brush and ran it through the eyelashes. 

Outcome and thoughts:

I found this process interesting. I found it quite a simple routine But I struggled with the White base as I found it moved around a lot on the skin. I had to work it into the skin quite a lot but once I had gotten it to the right coverage It was fine. I will however next time use my Kryolan base as I find it gives the perfect coverage for the Elizabethan look. I really liked the end result I think it looks very Elizabethan but probably from the later stage of her life as it is quite a lot of makeup.

My Final 3 designs and plans.

Look 1. Red Regal

 For my first look I wanted to capture The wealth and power of my Lady in waiting. With the use of deep reds and pale base colours I wanted to create a powerful look using the eyes as a main feature. For this look I used Kryolans Supra colour palette colour in white for the base and slightly contoured with a dark mauve colour from my mac palette. I then pushed the red from my Supra colour palette all around the eye and then blended it out then placed mac pigment over it to set it. I then used the same red from the kryolan palette to line the lips and i then blended it into the white already on the lips.  This was very easy and simple to apply but created a very dramatic look. As my researched progressed My designs developed and I started to delve deeper into my Lady in waiting's story.

I had practised this look on my partner Erin at the beginning and I loved it. However I feel its not strong enough to be my final design so I decided to do some more research to see how my ideas progressed.

Look 2. cultured and worldly

This is my second design Idea for my Final design. I really wanted to incorporate royal colours and Jewel colours in this design to signify royalty, wealth and the riches of the world (Music, art, language and culture). I feel that this represents Kat Ashley as she was the woman who taught Queen Elizabeth 6 luanguages, art, musical instruments, geography, mathematics, history. I feel that this was amazing for a woman to know these things in those days especially as an unknown woman from a modest-ish background. I also feel that this was an amazing gift that she gave to the future queen. Elizabth was known to have said that Kat ashley spent everyday teaching her new things as to prepare her for her future. I would use Kryolan white base over the face buffed in with a kabuki brush. I would then use eyeshadow from my Kryolan palette to shape,contour and add dimension to the face. I would then add glitter over the top in the same colours (Green, Red, Blue, Pink, Purple and gold) They would be deep tones and blended into each other.  

Look 3. Love and loyalty

This is my final design. This to me symbolises the love and devotion Kat Ashley gave to Elizabeth. She was like a mother to elizabeth. 

'Anne Boleyn gave me life but Kat Ashley gave me love' Quoting Elizabeth the first.

After Elizabeths mother was murdered by her father Kat Ashley was hired by Henry the 8th to be the princess's carer. she never left her side. and Elizabeth was said to have been devastated by her death and was by her bed side when she died. She devoted her whole life to Elizabeth not only to teach her about the world and to teach her skills and progress her talents, but she taught her love and showed her loyalty and gave her the only family life she would ever know. This is my final chosen design I really love the arrangement of the shadows and the colour combination. I also love the dots as I feel it adds depth to my design.

Practise with this design.

This was a practise I had done on myself and this where I was inspired to add the dots. I think this is a really strong look. I have however changed the lashes to black long fluttery fake lashes. I think this will look a lot more intense which is the look I'm going for.

Accessorises

I bought my hairband with the flowers and earrings from H&M. I wanted them to be flowers as I was inspired by the head decorations the women wore back in the Elizabethan times. They were very elaborate and beautiful and I'm inspired by flowers all the time so thought they would go beautifully with the makeup but with the hair as well. I have decided to put my hair in a middle parting and spray it white. This is a throwback to Elizabethan hairstyles as they liked there hair fair as it represented youth and the middle parting was also popular in Elizabethan times as the women liked their hair symmetrical. I also wanted big diamond earrings to signify wealth and wanted them to be rich heart colours to represent the love Kat ashley had for Elizabeth. I wanted the whole look to be passionate and abundant with colour and different textures.

Base Application using Brushes and colour matching: Practical lesson with Sue Mainstone.

Base application on Liberty.

We learned how to Cleanse, Tone and moisturise in this lesson and then how to apply foundation and concealer. We learned how important colour matching is when it comes to the base and how to set it properly to prevent movement etc.

Health and Safety check:

1. Check that all bags and belongings have been stored away properly.
2. Make sure my client is sat comfortably and caped. 
3. Cover my work station with couch roll.
4. Make sure all of my brushes have been washed and sterilised with Isopropyl ready for application.
5. Complete a consultation form with my client and check for any Contra-indications. 
6. Wash hands with soap and water to prevent bacteria from being transferred to my clients face. 
7.  Decant products onto my Palette to prevent cross contamination.

Cleansing, Toning and Moisturising: We begin by removing the eye makeup. We apply some cleansing lotion to some cotton pads and begin by gently placing them over the eyes and rubbing softly to start to remove the eye makeup. Once we feel we have done enough ourselves if there is still some left we let our client remove the rest as they will be able to be rougher with themselves. We have to make sure there is no makeup left on the face because this will make it harder when applying new makeup. If we apply new makeup and there is still makeup around the eyes (for example) It can make the fresh application look dirty. When you start to cleanse the rest of the face you begin by applying Cleansing lotion to some cotton pads and moving them around the face and start from the neck removing all old makeup and work your way up the face. Using circular motions. You then remove the cleanser with wet pads. Then you apply some toner to a cotton pad and move it around the face using the same technique you used for the cleanser. This will remove any excess makeup and cleanser and hydrate the skin. You then apply the moisturiser in the same way. This will add any needed moisture to the face and create a plump, hydrated canvas.

Primer, Foundation and concealer: 

With foundation application it has to be even coverage and needs to appear like skin. It needs to look invisible and natural. Primer: With this application you start by applying the correct primer. With this you analyse the skin type first. Once you have determined whether your client has oily, combination or dry skin you can then choose either a matte or satin primer or a combination of both if necessary. You can apply the primer using a foundation brush and with this you buff it into the skin. This is an important part of the base application as it protect your skin from clogging and creates an even surface and fills in any fine lines or pores. Foundation: After this you colour match your clients skin to the correct shade foundation. With this you analyse the skin tone, Does it have pink or yellow undertones? Is it dark or light? Once you have answered these questions you can begin to create your perfect colour. You start by choosing the closest colour match. You might be lucky and get it the first time but sometimes you need to add a little dark or light to get the perfect match Keeping in mind the skin tone. When you have have picked the correct skin tone and tested it on the face you can then begin by applying it all over the face, ears and neck with a foundation paddle brush. Getting into all the dips and nooks and crannies. Once you have applied the foundation to the face you then use a buffer brush to buff it in and create a seamless application. The buffing helps to push it into the skin and create a more natural look. Concealer: Once you have buffed it into the skin you can then apply the concealer. This helps to cover any blemishes and dark circles under the eyes. With the concealer the same rule applies to the shade as with the foundation. It has to match to create a seamless finish. With the application you apply it to the desired areas and then buff it gently. 

When buffing you have to be gentle to avoid lifting the foundation or concealer off of the face. Once you are confident with your application you then set it with translucent powder. 

Outcome and Evaluation: I was really happy with my application I felt it colour matched perfectly with Liberty's skin and gave her a glowing complexion whilst also giving her excellent coverage. Sue also gave me some really positive feedback too, which was really great to hear.  

Practise after Sue Mainstone's class and test shoot.

After my Lesson with Sue Maidstone in contouring, Me and my friends decided to spend a couple of hours in the photographic studio. We went to the dressing room part in the storage cupboard to practise skills we've learnt in Sue's class. I also decided to practise a full makeup look on Annie because she is my model for the assessment we have to do in Chris Overend's class assessment 'the beauty shoot'. We have to take 3 images in Black and White and another 3 in colour. So I thought I could do a test shoot. After finishing Annie's makeup In the dressing room I then set up the studio with a couple of my Classmates and Chris Overend's help as he had popped in to help another group. Chris helped us set up our lighting as I wanted a glowy effect.

Makeup Overview: 

Base: I wanted Annie to have a natural but polished look. I wanted her to have  dimension to her face and it be a warm look so I applied a bit more concealer (Annie's own Mac studio full coverage foundation) under her eyes and took it up to the top of her cheek bones. I then set this with Ben Nye banana powder to set. I then applied a bit more Illamasqua sculpting powder to under the cheekbones, temples, forehead and the sides of her nose. I then applied a light pink blush to her cheeks and then set this with mac translucent powder. Eyebrows: For her eyebrows I used the dark brown from my Mac cool/neutral palette and with a slanted brush created the eyebrow shape and filled them in. I also used the Nars concealer to highlight the brow bone and define the eyebrow shape.  Eyes: I used Dark brown eyeshadow also from my Mac cool/neutral palette on the ends of her eyelids, in the crease and to the bottom lashes and blended this out. I then applied the white from the same palette to the middle of her eyelids and to the corner's of her eyes and blended this also. I applied some black liner (but faintly) close to her top lash line to create a bit more definition to Annie's eyes and then got her to apply her own mascara as I wanted her to get really into the root as I needed definition. Although I'm very comfortable applying someones mascara I thought she could get closer as she's used to doing her own mascara. I then applied some white liner to her water line to make her white parts to her eyes look whiter and to make her eyes look bigger. This also makes the eyes look fresh and sparkle. Lips: Then lined her lips with a deep pink liner close to her natural lip colour. Then using a lip brush I filled them in.

Outcome: I took some photo's to document the application and outcome. I am really pleased with the end result. I think Annie looks beautiful in the final shot. I feel that I have really achieved a natural flattering look even though I used quite a lot of makeup to achieve this. Annie was also very happy with the outcome and this was great to hear. I feel that if you can make your client or model feel beautiful (depending on the look your going for) It's easier to get the best out of them on Camera. I really loved how Annie's eyebrows turned out too as I was going for an Audrey Hepburn look with the thick brow and natural beauty. I feel like I have achieved this. I'm really excited to shoot my final piece now. I feel like I have picked the perfect makeup and accessories and most importantly I feel I have picked the perfect model to create the image I want.
