Modern status symbols

Back in the day families commissioned portraits to display their wealth. The portraits would contain symbolic objects to display their wealth and position. In modern times we don't all have the money to commission portraits or photos but we do have access to technology and social media where we can edit our photos and share them with the world. Celebrities are always posting photos of their ad campaigns, photo shoots, album art work and selfies showing off their wealth and various activities. I wouldn't even say they always use symbolism as it seems they are pretty shameless about sharing their materialism. Maybe in the way they show off their style and jewels is almost a modern twist on how Elizabethan upper class people displayed their wealth and position in there portraits. In modern times it seems to be all about how much money you have, what car do you drive, what clothes and accessories you wear, what you look like etc. The only difference between now and then is that lower classes have a lot more access to expensive things or knock off versions.

To me these these images display everything I just mentioned. The rich colours, expensive jewels, powerful makeup and of course the crown as the crown was always a symbol of royalty back in Elizabethan times. Beyonce is known for calling herself Queen Bey and of course have creatively referenced famous royals before one being Queen Elizabeth the 1st in her Mrs Carter tour promotional campaign. The images are dark and edgy but very strong.

Beyonce herself at 34 has said before that she is shy when she's not on stage, which is crazy to think as she is one of the biggest superstar's on the planet. She has talked about having alter ego's when she performs which reminds me of Queen Elizabeth. I feel that she needed to create a character to rule. Beyonce however can take the stage as either Sasha Fierce or Yonce. She's an incredibly huge influence on young women today.
