I began my first week at
university this week. I’m studying Hair and Makeup design and I was very eager
to start! It began with my induction week, so there were a lot of different
activities set up for us!
After meeting my fellow students,
enrolling, registering and taking part in icebreaking activities we had the
chance to meet Spob O’Brian (art director) and Helen Roche (makeup artist) of
Illamasqua. They gave us a lecture on the Wednesday at midday. They explained
what there roles were in the company and explained how they got started and
things they’ve learned etc. I found this incredibly inspiring especially as
they are both so accomplished in they’re careers and so passionate about what
they do. Spob spoke a lot about how theatre can prepare you for working in film
and how it can be a good bridge into that genre. Spob started her career in
theatre and progressed onto film due to networking opportunities. I hadnt
thought about working in theatre before but after this lecture I have a new
appreciation of its potential importance when pursuing a job in makeup in the
film industry. This is something I would love to do. I loved her passion for the film industry and
her love for being part of a creative team, working together to create
something special. This is important for me to learn, as this is the kind of
environment I want to work in. I was heading more towards fashion before this
but now I feel I want to see what this part of the industry has to offer.
After a break we came back to the
JM building to watch a master class taught by Spob and Helen of Illamasqua.
This was really great as we got to see them in action and pick up a few tips
and tricks along the way. I really enjoyed the demonstration and was surprised
at how easy they made it look. Obviously they have years of experience under their
belt but it was so creative and fun that it highlighted to me, my fear of
mistakes and need for perfectionism with my creativity. I can also be quite
hard on myself if I make mistakes but this was really reassuring to know that
even the leaders of the industry make mistakes but it’s this that help’s you
grow as an artist. This is invaluable learning for me, as I will need to know
this whilst I’m studying and growing as a makeup artist.
I really enjoyed this experience and
feel impassioned and motivated to make the most out of my journey through
university and the opportunities available to me.
Because the practical aspect of
this course is easy for me to understand I was a little worried about the
blogging introduction given to us on Thursday at 11.30. I can struggle with
I.T. and technology but after the initial few bumps I managed to get the hang
of it and found my way. This was really useful, as I know that the Internet and
social media have a very important role in this industry. Blogging is one of
the best ways of getting your work out there. It can be a crucial networking
tool for marketing your business and talent.
